Not Just the Sandwiches, Customer Satisfaction Works


Four years ago, we were out with our friends and were looking for a good place to have breakfast. That’s when we came across this new cafe near Danny’s called Sandwichworkz, the name looked pretty interesting, and hence we decided to give it a shot. As soon as we entered this place, we were greeted with a big warm smile and the owner asked us what would we like to have. We were a bit surprised and highly impressed by the hospitality of this place. Although the place was a bit small, it felt very comfortable. The food was brilliant too. Simple, well presented and Yummy.


Since that day, this become one of our favourite places for Sunday brunch. We go there quite often and a lot has changed over time. They’ve added things to the décor, expanded their menu, but the only thing that remains constant is the owner’s big, warm smile that greets you every single time you enter this place.

This place is owned by the sweetest couple that we’ve ever met : Himanshu and Takshashila Desai. Last week, we went to Sandwichworkz to get their story, and we left that place with an all new perspective about reviewing food and the whole food business.

And Their Story Begins…

Himanshu grew up in Delhi and his love for making food began at a very early age. He was the eldest sibling and hence used to help out his mother in the kitchen when he was small. This hobby soon cultivated into his biggest passion as he grew up. By the time he reached college, he used to cook all the Sunday meals for his family. This became like an unspoken tradition which continued for years. It stopped when he got married to Takshashila and they left for Nigeria in 1999 for work. Even though he was in a corporate job, this did not stop his passion for cooking. He has worked in Ahmedabad, Singapore, Gurgaon and Nigeria. Due to the nature of his work, he used to travel a lot, and wherever he went, he would try out all the the famous dishes/specialities in restaurants. Then he would go home and try to make them. He and his wife,  had always been very passionate about food and they used to watch a lot of recipe videos on Youtube and try them out at home. They have not only seen and read recipes, but also written quite a few. In Nigeria and Singapore, they used to invite people over on weekends for dinner and make lavish dinners. They also used to host barbecue nights for their friends where they would cook for everyone. Even though he had a corporate job, his passion for cooking just kept on growing.

After the company that Himanshu was working for in Gurgaon shut down, they both decided to open a sandwich shop. That’s how they came up with the name. Since the rents were too high in Delhi, they started looking for a place in Ahmedabad. Finding the right place was pretty tough as a lot of people turned them down because they wanted to cook non-vegetarian food in their cafe. When they finally got this place, the only hitch was that it was too big for a sandwich shop. So they expanded their menu by adding everything they knew how to make.

It has been four years since this place has opened up and it is one of the most homeliest cafe’s we’ve ever been to. Customer satisfaction is so important for them that they even have a clause in the menu that says “Don’t pay if you aren’t 100% satisfied”. Himanshu has a lot of regular customers due to the fantastic bond that he keeps with each and every one of them.

They have expanded their business now and recently opened a new fine dining restaurant now called Tandoorworkz. It is the go-to place for delicious authentic north Indian food. 

Very rarely do we come across people who would do anything just to make their customer’s smile. I never thought that any restaurant/business owner would actually not mind taking monetary losses if their customers are not satisfied. After talking to them, this is what touched us the most. What keeps them going is the love and affection that they get from their customers.

Nobody can Bake it like the NoMads


Pizza is not a trend, it’s a way of life. 

As two people who live by this saying, there were absolutely no doubts about the fact that we wanted to start this new venture with the story of a legendary pizza place. And when it comes to legendary, the first place that came to our mind was No Mad Baker. We contacted the owners and asked them if they would be interested in a short interview, and being the friendly duo that they are, they readily agreed.

So here we bring to you, the story of Varun and Regina, two of the most enthusiastic and optimistic people that we’ve ever come across. They do not follow anyone or anything, except for their hearts.  It all started after they passed out from college and were totally clueless about what they wanted to do with their lives. They didn’t want to be stuck in a monotonous job. All that they knew was that both of them shared a common interest which was cooking food and experimenting with different recipes.

The Crazy Duo

Their story begins…

One day, Regina’s brother suggested them to try making food for PDPU students as there were no proper eating joints near PDPU at that time. They decided to make sandwiches and see if it would work. They started with selling the sandwiches to the shop owners outside the college, who would later, sell it to the students. The sandwiches were a big hit, and they got a lot of appreciation for that. The only problem being that they were very particular about the ingredients that they used and weren’t ready to compromise with that. Due to this, half of the day they used to go around the whole town in their ‘famous blue activa’ trying to get the best quality ingredients. Soon they realized that it wasn’t worth it as their whole day used to go in collecting ingredients and delivering them till PDPU, hence after a month of this tedious cycle, they stopped.

The next recipe that they thought of experimenting with was curry buns. They started with Veg & Non Veg curry buns and used to go to the lane near TGB, and sell it to youngsters for 20-30 rs. Approaching people was a bit weird at first, and the first thing that they ended up saying to their first customer was “Veg or Non Veg?”. After a little time, they got pretty comfortable with this. Their curry buns were a hit, and then they added cupcakes to their menu too. One of the people who had tried their buns was having a Harley Davidson event and he asked them if they would be interested in catering for it. They readily agreed and till date, consider this as their first big break .Catering for 400 people was quite a task, but they managed to pull it off with the help of their friends and family. After successfully pulling off their first corporate event, this duo went to the famous TV show Sanjeev Kapoor ke Kitchen Khiladi. This show was a huge learning experience for them. They met a lot of people and learned how cooking is a lot more than just the ingredients used in the recipe, it was all about the science behind it. They started experimenting with different recipes after the show ended and blogging about it. They would write about the delicious things that people could make with the common ingredients lying around in the house. At the end of the blog, they were broke as they had spent all their money buying ingredients to experiment with new recipes.

The ‘Mad’ Idea

One evening, they were sitting around and craving for a pizza, due to the broke state and lack of Non Veg pizza options, they decided to make one instead of ordering it. They invited their friends over and turned it into a pizza party. Their friends loved the pizza and couldn’t stop praising it. That’s how the idea of a pizza delivery joint came in. The name comes from the fact that they were like nomads who traveled all around the city to get the perfect ingredients. They spent a week after that, trying to perfect their recipe and once that was done, asked one of their friend to make a menu. The initial menu had 4 Non Veg pizza’s and One Veg Pizza. They posted the menu on the Foodaholics in Ahmedabad group and it was immediately taken down as the group did not allow promotions. But the admin of the group, Rohan  Bhatt, decided to try their Pizza and he loved it. He let them put the menu back on the group and they got 16 orders on the first day. They said yes to everything without realizing that all the delivery addresses  were in different directions and they had to personally deliver each pizza. They couldn’t complete all orders and hence ended up getting a few bad comments. They didn’t let this break their spirit. They went to Rohan for advice and the three mutually decided to work together. From then on, Rohan managed the management part of things and Varun and Regina made the pizza’s and delivered it.

It started from a small shop called “Body Touch” (The board was of the tailor’s shop who rented the shop before them). And now it is one of the most popular pizza joints in the city and they have recently opened a  new cafe. They started with making 4 Pizza’s an hour and now make 60-70 per hour. They faced a lot of challenges and setbacks, but the only thing that kept them going was the will to give their customers a pizza of good quality and taste.

They’ve sold food on the streets, traveled all day trying to get ingredients, done a corporate event with no experience and started a new pizza place from their kitchen. They’ve had negative reviews and crazy customers. They’ve had their share of ups and downs. And yet, they didn’t let any obstacle stop them or break their spirit. Through all the things changing constantly and the challenges that came one after the other, the only thing that remained constant was them being together (Also…Their cute blue activa 😛 ) ❤

And now it’s time for the BIG SURPRISE :

You won’t have to wait outside their doors for long as they’re planning on opening a dine in before the end of 2016  (Yes, it’s official!)

Writing about food is easy, eating food is easier, but what a lot of people don’t know is the struggle that goes behind it. People eat and comment about food, that is very common. We did not want to do something so mainstream. We wanted to do something different.

We are two big time foodies who love experimenting with food. Our mutual love for food motivated us to do something to be associated with the world of food, but we couldn’t figure out exactly what to do. We didn’t want to review places, because it is too common and there is already Zomato for that. We wanted to go one step ahead. We wanted to explore the world of food, see where the magic happens, what inspires people, and what keeps them going.  

There’s so much that goes into creating something unique, and more than that is the risk involved. It can take days, months or even years to perfect a recipe. Making food is an art.  It’s not only about the ingredients used , it’s also about the experiences, knowledge, memories and the science that goes behind it.

We wanted to know why do people take so much pain and use so many things, just to get that one particular taste? Why do they leave their high paying jobs (You’ll be surprised at the number of people who’ve done this) just to open a restaurant or a small food joint? Why don’t they give up even after they don’t get enough customers? Why don’t those finger cuts and accidental kitchen burns demoralize any of them? Why do they forget about the efforts that they  have put in or the profits they would make and still just try really hard to bring a smile on their customers’ faces?

In this blog, we bring to you the stories of such passionate individuals who love food and live for food. Their fame is solely driven by their food.  The ones that didn’t let failure stop them.

In a way, we are trying to inspire people through food. We want people to know how starting something new comes with it’s own share of ups and downs. There will be times when you’ll be frustrated and stay up all night, racking your brains, trying to figure out where you went wrong. You’ll start feeling hopeless and second guessing yourself. You’ll get scared. But as you will read the stories on our blog, you’ll realise that you’re not alone. There is inspiration and passion that made these guys go on despite the short failures that they faced. We bring you such stories and hope that you find the inspiration to go on, and don’t stop chasing your dreams.
